What is acetylcysteine?

The name of this drug is probably familiar to you. In fact, acetylcysteine is the active ingredient in Fluimucil products, such as Fluimucil Syrup or Fluimucil Forte, among others. It is a compound also known as (R)-2-acetamido-3-sulfanylpropanoic acid or N-acetylcysteine, or NAC for short. It is composed of hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen molecules, and its chemical formula is C5H9NO3S.

WHAT IS ACETYLCYSTEINE USED FOR?

Acetylcysteine is used as a coadjuvant treatment in respiratory processes with excessive or thick mucous secretion, making it more fluid.

Acetylcysteine can come in various forms, such as syrups, effervescent tablets or granules, although it can also be administered by inhalation or intravenous injection, the latter two always under medical supervision.

Likewise, acetylcysteine is a precursor in the synthesis of glutathione, normalizing its levels, being an optimal antioxidant for the cells.

DOES ACETYLCYSTEINE HAVE INTERACTIONS AND SIDE EFFECTS?

Likewise, we should always consult our doctor or pharmacist about the different interactions that may occur with other medications we may be taking, and indicate to them if we have any special circumstances that may interfere with their administration or the appearance of any side effects.

It should not be administered at the same time as antitussives and inhibitors of bronchial secretion, such as anticholinergics and antihistamines. It should not be taken during the period of lactation.

Acetylcysteine has rare side effects, although hypersensitivity reactions such as itching, hives, skin rashes, bronchospasm, headache, ringing in the ears, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea have been described.
